2013/2014 season of Circuit Banco do Brazil gets set to make its mark
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 16, 2013 - The 2013/2014 season of the Circuit Banco do Brazil for Beach Volleyball was launched at an event held at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro on Friday.
At the event the new competition format was unveiled along with the plans for the new arena and uniforms for the athletes.
The 2013/14 circuit will comprise nine stages, which will determine the winning pair in both the men’s and women’s competition. A second level competition will be added to the end of the circuit - the ‘Super Beach’ tournament – where the winners of the circuit will play the top five national ranked teams as well as three other pairs invited by the CBV.
The first stage of the circuit will be held in Recife on August 29 with four more stages organised before the end of the year, while the other stops on the circuit are scheduled to take place next year. The last stop will take place in Maceió with the ‘Super Beach’ tournament to be held shortly thereafter on the sands of Salvador.
"These changes are in place to give even more excitement to a competition that has established itself in Brazil’s sporting calendar over the years,” says Thaddeus Saad, Superintendent of Beach Volleyball at the CBV. “This will make for an even more interesting show for the athletes, public, media, sponsors and partners. We want to make our product ever better."
"We have created an event with many new features, which has a much greater weight for athletes because, in the end, the ‘Super Beach’ features the best players,” said Olympic champion Ricardo. “The sport really needs these changes, not only for its development but also to attract further public and partners. Everything has to go together for the good of beach volleyball,” he continued.
Plans for the new arena and uniforms for the 2013/2014 season were also unveiled, with the designs for both done by students of the Center for Design and Fine Arts at the University of São Paulo.
The process began in March this year, when the University’s administration decided to give students the opportunity to work in multidisciplinary teams to brainstorm ideas for the arena and the uniforms based on the following: function, form and beauty.
The proposals were reviewed by representatives of the CBV, the Bank of Brazil and Olympikus and the winners elected thereafter.
"The arena is beautiful and very well planned,” said Maria Elisa Antonelli. “Besides comfort, the public can also be shaded at certain times of the day, which is essential. And there are many attractions around the arena, which families can stay longer and enjoy.”
