Beach volleyball stars in the running for top international prize

Talita da Rocha Antunes and Taiana Lima have had a lot to celebrate this year with five gold medal wins on this year's World Tour

New York, USA, August 12, 2013 – Beach volleyball stars Talita da Rocha Antunes and Taiana Lima are finalists for the 2013 Sportswoman of the Year Award (team sports) conferred by the Women’s Sports Foundation each year to celebrate the achievements of top female athletes and leaders in sport.

An impressive group of elite athlete finalists will contend for the Sportswoman of the Year Award in the individual and team categories, representing 14 sports including beach volleyball. The finalists on the 2013 Sportswoman of the Year Award ballot have distinguished themselves from the field by their record-breaking, historic, and simply amazing athletic performances.

Talita Antunes and Taiana Lima, a new beach volleyball partnership for 2013 have shown themselves to be a cut about the competition on this year’s World Tour. They currently top the FIVB Women’s international season’s scorecard having won gold at the Grand Slams in Shanghai, The Hague, Rome, Long Beach and Berlin. If they win the popular vote, Antunes and Lima will join other beach volleyball stars Misty May Treanor and Kerri Walsh as recipients of this prestigious award.

"I'm very happy and surprised too,” said Taiana Lima. “Our partnership was formed only eight months ago and I did not expect to receive such a prestigious award in the United States. But it is a sign of global recognition. This is a good boost for us and we can take this momentum onto the court. I am pleased that I can share this moment with Talita an experienced athlete with two Olympic Games in the bag," said Taiana.

Nominations for the Sportswoman of the Year awards – Individual and Team – are made by sport governing bodies and the public. Sportswoman of the Year finalists will be voted on by the Foundation’s Awards Committee and the public beginning on August 12, through 11:59 p.m. ET on September 9, 2013.

The award ceremony will take place on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 when star athletes, corporate and industry leaders, sports organisations, celebrities and journalists will come together for the unveiling.

Votes for the Sportswoman of the Year awards can be cast online at wspr.tc/VoteSOY2013 or www.womenssportsfoundation.org/home/programs/awards.
