Perfect start for new Brazilian team Thiago and Brandao

Brazil's Thiago Santos Barbosa and Oscar Brandao, partners and friends
Anapa, Russia, July 26, 2013 - On their first FIVB event as a new team Thiago Santos Barbosa and Oscar Brandao booked their third straight win in pool play at the Anapa Open on Friday, defeating Latvia’s Haralds Regza and Abolins Armands 21-15, 21-18.

“It was not hard for us to motivate for this match”, Thiago said. “Cause we could win the pool. It’s not always you have the chance to win the pool. It’s a good opportunity to have one less match tomorrow, so we can rest a little.”

The 30-year old Thiago, who is surrounded by kids who want either an autograph or his shirt everywhere he goes in Anapa, has been playing on the World Tour since 2006, with partners like Harley and Pedro Cunha.

But for 28-year old Brandao Anapa is his first FIVB event, apart from two Junior World Championships in 2004 and 2005.

“We started to play together two tournaments ago in South-America and we won those two events”, Thiago said. “We were very motivated after we won because it was a good feeling. It keeps you motivated to do more. I think that’s what happening with us now, because you win and then you want more and more. That’s what keeps us going.”

Team for the long run

According to their coach the new combination is not just a try-out, they are to play together for at least the rest of the season. Thiago is pleased. “The communication is good, because we are also friends, and we can talk about anything, be critical at each other as well. For us that’s normal, because we already did that as friends.”

Before the Anapa Open started, they dreamt of first place. “And now I think we have to chase this dream, because we already won two tournaments and will try to win the third.”
