Porto, Portugal, July 11, 2013 – Asian U21 champions Rendy Licardo and Mohammad Ashfiya from Indonesia booked two straight wins at the start of their first FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championships in Porto on Thursday.

Only a few teams in the men’s competition, including top teams from Austria and Russia, could match this excellent accomplishment.

In the women’s competition Russia left their mark with two teams booking straight wins. Both teams await an interesting final pool match on Friday.

Anna Gorbunova and Nadezda Makroguzova take on Czechs Barbora Pilatova and Hana Tresnakova for the pool title. Daria Myshonkova and Valeriya Shvedova will play Italy’s Gaia Concetti and Agata Zuccarelli for top position and a bye in the first round.

Lack of communication makes Jamaican girls mess up

Lack of communication messed up the first match of Jamaica’s Tionna Graham and Lisanne Roofe at the FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championships in Porto.

The two 14-year old girls lost 2-0 (21-6 21-7) to Australia’s Phoebe Bell and Agnieszka Kudziela and were very disappointed about their first ever international match. More

Indonesia: short guys can jump
Before and after every match Rendy Licardo and Mohammad Ashfiya jump up and down like a bunch of Masai warriors. But unlike the Masai the boys from Indonesia don’t want to impress their opponents but simply want to improve their jumping abilities.

“We are just small boys from Indonesia. People in Indonesia are not very tall. We jump every day, so we can play a good game against taller boys”, 16-year old Licardo said. More
