Indonesia: short guys can jump
“We are just small boys from Indonesia. People in Indonesia are not very tall. We jump every day, so we can play a good game against taller boys”, 16-year old Licardo said.
Licardo and 17-year old Ashfiya won the U21 Asian Championships in May in India by defeating Kazakhstan in the final.
The FIVB U19 World Championship in Porto is their first ever world event, but they made an impressive start with an easy 2-0 (21-14 21-15) win over Liam Matheson and Brad Fullerton from New-Zealand on Thursday.
“We are happy, we played a good match, no mistakes”, Licardo said.
Both boys learned to play beach volleyball in school and train in a national beach volleyball centre in Sidoarjo close to Surabaja on East-Java.
They travelled 24 hours to get to Portugal, a country they only know from football. “Love Portugal, love Ronaldo”, Licardo said.
Their ultimate goal this year is to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games in China next year. “They are here in Porto to gain experience”, their coach said. “But secretly I hope maybe they will play another final too.”
