The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013 podium

Stare Jablonki, Poland, July 7, 2013 – Thirteenth seeds Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen of the Netherlands are the new world champions after beating Brazilian 10th seeds Ricardo Santos and Alvaro Filho 2-0 (21-18, 21-16) amongst sensational scenes at Stare Jablonki on Sunday.

The surprise package of the tournament won their country’s first ever World Championship medal which bodes well for the next edition of the FIVB’s premier beach volleyball tournament, which will be held in the Netherlands in 2015.

The men’s final brought to a close seven thrilling days of beach volleyball action in the beautiful Mazury region with the Chinese women’s pair Chen Xue and Zhang Xi walking away with their first world title on Saturday and Brouwer and Meeuwsen their first ever FIVB medal.

Germans bounce back to claim bronze

Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik earned the biggest prize of their careers by defeating 2011 world champions Alison Cerutti  and Emanuel Rego to win the bronze with a 2-0 (21-17, 21-19) victory. The Germans started strongly and didn’t let the Brazilians settle in the first set. In the second the lead swung back and forth, but eventually Erdmann and Matysik opened a lead and while Alison and Emanuel tried to peg them back they were too far in front and won with a Matysik spike.
