Austrian pairs set to meet in round of 16

Doris and Stefanie (right) Schwaiger face their fellow Austrians for a place in the last four
Stare Jablonki, Poland, July 4, 2013 – Austria will be guaranteed a team in the women's quarterfinals of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013, but one of either Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger or Barbara Hansel and Katharina Schutzenhofer will be eliminated following their clash in the round of 16.

There is little to separate the sides as both have gone unbeaten in the tournament so far. The Schwaiger sisters are regulars in the latter stages of major tournaments and won silver medals at the Shanghai Grand Slam this year.

Hansel and Schutzenhofer only teamed up at the start of 2013 and a ninth place finish at the Corrientes Grand Slam was their best result of the year.

Brazil’s Liliane Maestrini and Barbara Seixas have the chance to continue their progression against stubborn Dutch opponents Sanne Keizer and Marleen van Iersel, who knocked out Germany’s number one team Ilka Semmler and Katrin Holtwick.

Spain’s Elsa Baquerizo McMillan and Liliana Fernandez Steiner will have their resolve tested against the unbeaten second seeds April Ross and Whitney Pavlik. They fought back from an opening loss to record two wins and then beat Australia’s Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy in the round of 32, but Ross has her sights set on another world title to go with the one she won in 2009.

The women’s competition continues on Friday with the round of 16 and quarterfinals. The semifinals and medal matches are scheduled for Saturday. The men’s competition is one day behind and concludes on Sunday.
