Germany's Kira Walkenhorst attacks against Agatha from Brazil

Stare Jablonki, Poland, July 3, 2013 – The third day of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013 came to a gripping close with the women’s pool play concluded while the men’s competition completed the second day of their group play at Stare Jablonki, Poland on Wednesday.

Under the beautiful sun and a little sprinkle of rain there was plenty of drama around the five courts positioned on the banks of Lake Szelag with upsets and tension the name of the game.

The women’s competition will see the Round of 32 completed on Thursday while the men will finish pool play.

Men’s review - Mexican duo shock Austrians to make history
Mexican pair Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros made history when they beat Robin Seidl and Alexander Huber at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013 on Wednesday, their first victory in only their second match at the tournament. The duo only started playing as a team this year and won two gold medals on the NORCECA Tour in North and Central America. They then played their first FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Grand Slam together in Rome before they travelled to Poland. More

Women’s preview - Vanuatu duo rewarded with Czech challenge
Vanuatu’s Elwin Miller and Henriette Iatika were rewarded for winning twice and finishing second in their pool by being drawn against Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova of the Czech Republic in the first elimination round. Like Miller and Iatika, the Czechs won two and lost one in pool play, but they did enough in the three matches to hold off the challenge of Spain’s Liliana Fernandez Steiner and Elsa Baquerizo McMillan to top their pool. Men’s preview - Austrians eye Brazilian scalp and first place in pool
Austrian pair Alexander Horst and Clemens Doppler have their eyes on a major scalp and first place in their pool when play resumes in the men’s competition of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Mazury 2013 on Thursday. However, they will need to be at their best to beat former world champion Ricardo Santos and his current partner Alvaro Filho. Both teams have won their two matches so far and it is the Austrians who sit narrowly ahead of the Brazilians on top of Pool K. More

Poland's Fijalek and Prudel - the best is yet to come
Home favourites Grzegorz Fijalek and Mariusz Prudel already secured a spot in the knockout rounds after their second straight win at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013, but say they are still keeping something in reserve. “You can't show everything from the beginning, but we're trying to play good enough to win. I think we are getting better every day,” Fijalek said on Wednesday after their 2-0 (21-18 21-15) win over the Chilean cousins Esteban and Marco Grimalt. “The most important thing is that we are winning, that's what counts in sport.” More

Borger and Evandro proving to be aces in the pack
Karla Borger and Evandro Goncalves have already begun to show their serving prowess, with the pair leading women’s and men’s serving at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013. Borger has continued her excellent form from the Rome Grand Slam, where she was named smart player of the tournament, by serving 11 aces in her and Britta Buthe’s first two matches. The German duo now face a clash to decide who tops their pool against Italian’s Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti after both pairs won their first two fixtures. More

Beach volleyball debutant Sarah Pavan enjoys the best of both sides
Canada’s star volleyball player Sarah Pavan made her debut this week at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships and she loves every bit of it, but at the same time her passion for volleyball has not diminished. So for the time being she is going to play both. “I have been an indoor player for 15 years and I love it. I just can’t walk away from the sport that has given me so much. It’s still the sport that I love. I have to keep playing for a little while.” More

Paraguay under the spell of beach volleyball
In Paraguay this week it is all about beach volleyball on the sport channels and in the newspapers and the reason for this is that Patricia ‘Pati’ Caballero and Michelle Valiente are making history as the first Paraguayan team to qualify for the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships. “We have talked to almost every media back home”, Pati said. “Football is the most important sport in our country, but everyone is cheering for us now and we have a lot of fans. Everyone is keeping their fingers crossed for us.” Until this year 29-year old Pati and her 15-year old partner Michelle, who’s the youngest player in Stare Jablonki, only competed on the South American Tour, where their best result was reaching the quarterfinals at the Chilean and Venezuelan legs.
