Men start campaign as storm hits town

Julius Brink's replacement Thomas Kaczmarek of Germany celebrates an impressive victory with Sebastian Fuchs against USA's Lucena and Hyden

Stare Jablonki, Poland, July 2, 2013 – Day two of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013 in Stare Jablonki, Poland saw the men in action for the first time while the women entered the second day of pool play. An incredible storm postponed play during the afternoon but all matches were completed including the last on centre court which finished under the help of the lights of the advertising screens with Germany’s Sebastian Fuchs and Thomas Kaczmarek defeating Nicholas Lucena and John Hyden of USA 2-1 (17-21, 21-16, 24-22).

Wednesday sees the final day of pool play for women and the second day of pool action for the men.

All to play for as women’s pool play draws to a close
Teams will be jostling for position as the final matches in women’s pool play as the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013 take place on Wednesday. A number of sides have already won two from two and will want a third to go into the elimination rounds full of confidence, while others will be seeking the best result possible to secure as good a placing as they can for the first single elimination round of 32 that takes place on Friday. Germans eye chance to take control of pool
German duo Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik will be aiming to seize control of pool H when the men’s tournament at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013 resumes on Wednesday. They beat Argentina’s Pablo Bianchi and Facundo Del Coto 2-0 (21-11, 21-14) and know that if they can defeat Venezuela’s Igor Hernandez and Jesus Villafane, who enjoyed a victory over USA’s Todd Rogers and Ryan Doherty that they will be top of their pool with one match remaining. Greece’s Vasiliki Arvaniti takes on a whole different role and starts from zero again
After two rounds of pool play at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013 triple Olympian Vasiliki Arvaniti is still empty handed. Two matches, two defeats. The veteran Arvaniti, who took part in five earlier editions and finished ninth in 2005, 2007 and 2009, would have been very disappointed, but the new one is not. The 28-year old Greek player had to start from scratch this year after her long-time partner Maria Tsiartsiani stopped playing to have surgery on her shoulder and in the meantime fell pregnant. Arvaniti started looking for a new partner and found one on the volleyball court, 20-year old Panagiota ‘Penny’ Karagkouni. More

Smedins ignores fraternal bond to make winning start
Janis Smedins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs made a winning start to the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013, but one needed to beat his elder brother and the other his former partner to do so. Smedins was up against his brother Toms Smedins, while Aleksandrs Samoilovs was facing Ruslans Sorokins, the man he played with at the London 2012 Olympic Games and the fifth seeds needed to fight back from an opening set loss to win 2-1 (18-21, 27-25, 15-12). Nystrom sisters shock first seeds with two-set victory
Erika and Emilia Nystrom pulled off the first major upset of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013 when they earned a 2-0 (21-17, 21-14) win over first seeds Chen Xue and Zhang Xi on day two of the women’s tournament on Tuesday. The Finnish twins started in determined mood and quickly put the first seeds on the backfoot. They didn’t slow down after winning the first set and built on the momentum to nullify the threat of Chen Xue at the net and keep Zhang Xi occupied at the back of the court. More

Austria's Barbara Hansel and Katharina Schützenhöfer claimed a spot in the elimination phase on Tuesday
Much to their own surprise Austria’s Barbara Hansel and Katharina Schützenhöfer booked their ticket to the elimination rounds already on the second day of pool play at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013. In a very challenging match the new team beat Swiss pair of Nadine Zumkehr and Joana Heidrich 2-1 (17-21, 21-19, 19-17) on Tuesday after a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands on the first day. For 29-year old Hansel this is already her best result ever at the World Championships. The experienced blocker participated in four editions but never got past pool play before. Hansel’s long time partner Sara Montagnolli said her goodbyes after last season and in 2013 she teamed up with talented junior player Katharina Schützenhöfer, who is only 19 years old. More

Russia’s Ukolova and Khomyakova are not just another one hit wonder
Evgenia Ukolova and Ekaterina Khomyakova recovered on Tuesday from their disappointing start at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013. The Russian pair lost their first match against Canada on Monday, but defeated Australia’s Mariafe Artacho and Jessyka Ngauamo 2-1 (21-11 19-21 15-7) in their second pool play match. “We knew we had to win today, because we lost to Canada. So today was a very important game”, Ukolova said. In the first set they overpowered the Asian U21 Champions 21-11, but 17-year old Ngauamo and 19-year old Artacho came back strong in the second.
