Teams out to build on early momentum

Italy's Marta Menegatti (left) and Greta Cicolari are eyeing a second win in two
Stare Jablonki, Poland, July 1, 2013 – A number of highly-rated teams will be out to guarantee their place in the knockout rounds on day two of the women’s competition at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, Mazury 2013.

Italy’s Marta Menegatti and Greta Cicolari, Germany’s Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst and Ilka Semmler and Katrin Holtwick all made winning starts to the tournament and know that a second win will mean their names will at the very least go into the draw for the first knockout round.

Menegatti and Cicolari will take on Varapatsorn Radarong and Tanarattha Udomchavee of Thailand, Ludwig and Walkenhorst face Switzerland’s Tanja Goricanec and Tanja Huberli, while Semmler and Holtwick play Jantine van der Vlist and Marloes Wesselink from The Netherlands.

Number one seeds Chen Xue and Zhang Xi will be out to make it two wins from two when they meet Finland’s Erika and Emilia Nystrom, while Brazil’s Maria Antonelli and Agatha Bednarczuk play Martina Bonnerova and Barbora Hermannova of the Czech Republic.

There are also a number of big names seeking to make up from surprise opening losses. Most notably Brazil’s Talita Antunes and Taiana Lima will be aiming to recover from losing to their compatriots Maria-Clara and Carolina Salgado against England’s Zara Dampney and Lucy Boulton of England.

The women’s competition continues on Tuesday with another round of pool play. After the final round on Wednesday 32 teams, the first and second ranked in each pool and the top eight third ranked teams, advance to the elimination phase. The semifinals and medal matches are scheduled for Saturday. The men’s competition is one day behind and concludes on Sunday.
