South American Tour: A double title for Brazil in the sand

Newly formed Brazilian men’s duo, James and Oscar, won the 2012-2013 South American Tour

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, July 1, 2013 – Brazil’s women secured their title while newly formed Brazilian men’s duo, James and Oscar, won the 2012-2013 South American Tour.

Brazil’s men also ended with a season championship. In the women's final, Argentina’s Ana Gallay and Georgina Klug won the gold medal, while Brazilian Metin and Carol Horta won silver.

The men's tournament was played in nine stages, in Santa Fe, Argentina; Viña de Mar, Chili; Montevideo, Urguay,  Lima, Peru; Asuncion, Paraguay; Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela; Cochabamba, Bulgaria; Girardot, Columbia; and Sobral, Brazil.

Brazil finished in first place, with 1,600 points, followed by Chile (1,540) and Venezuela (1,440) rising to the highest place of the podium four times  in the last two stages with Thiago and Oscar.

"Playing under that sun, is not easy,” Thiago said. “But it was a good game.  I Would like to thanks Shelda, the Secretary of Sports in Sobral (who also won the silver medal in the Olympics and Sydney/2000 Athens/2004) for bringing this step for Sobral and provided joy to the people here. Brazil won the stage and the season,” said Thiago.

To reach the final, Thiago and Oscar defeated the Venezuelan pair Ramos and Rangel by 2-1. In the other semifinal, Chilean cousins Marco and Esteban Grimalt beat the Brazilian team Saymon and Fabio to 2-0. The Chileans failed to secure a win against Thiago and Oscar, who won a beautiful victory 2-0.

Saymon and Fabio Ramos won third place.

In the women's tournament, Brazil secured the title of the season in Girardot, Columbia, but the feast was celebrated in Sobral by the Argentina pair Ana Gallay and Georgina Klug.

In the semifinals, Neide and Carol Horta passed Brazilians Thais and Sandressa with a victory 2-0.  Gallay and Klug defeated Andrea and Claudia Galindo, of Colombia, also by 2-0. The Colombians eventually secured third place by beating the Brazilians and Thais Sandressa by 2-0. Among women, the overall picture of the South American circuit ended with Brazil leading the ranking with 1,760 points, followed by Argentina (1,520) and Chile (1,160).
