Eight teams from eight countries reach Umag Main Draw

 
Brazil's Guto Carvalhaes and Allison were among the qualification teams advancing to main draw
Umag, Croatia, June 19, 2013 – Eight teams from eight different countries won their final qualification match at the U21 World Championships in Umag on Wednesday and thereby reached the main draw of the junior event. Among them the 2012 U19 men’s world champions.

Poland, Brazil, Austria and Norway all added one more team this way in the men’s competition and in the women’s teams from Venezuela, Russia, USA and Germany made it to the main draw.

Besides the eight winning teams per gender ten more lucky losers were added to the main draw, six in the women’s and four in the men’s competition, because some main draw teams were forced to withdraw due to travel problems.

Youth world champions Bryl and Kujawiak advance to main draw in Umag

In a rematch of the 2012 U19 semifinal Poland’s Michal Bryl and Kacper Kujawiak defeated Russia’s Viacheslav Kirienko and Dmitry Uraikin again at the final qualification round of the U21 World Championships on Wednesday in Umag. The Polish under 19 world champions won their first two matches of the day in straight sets, but needed three against Russia: 21-13 19-21 15-12. More

Venezuela beats Brazilian air force to claim main draw berth


Venezuela’s Gina Vivas Andrade and Guadalupe Gonzalez Camacho claimed a main draw berth at the FIVB U21 World Championships on Wednesday by defeating a team way superior in size. More

Main draw starts at 10 am on Thursday with three rounds of pool play spread out over two days. The top three teams advance to the elimination phase on Saturday. The semifinals and medal matches for both men and women are scheduled for Sunday on the centre court of the Stella Maris tennis grounds.

Umag is located in the northwest region of Croatia, close to Italy and Slovenia. The coastal city stages the U21 World Championships for the first time after hosting the FIVB U19 World Championships in 2011 and World Tour Open single gender events from 2005 till 2008.
