Corrientes Grand Slam enters business end

Corrientes, Argentina, May 24, 2013 - Day three of the five-day Corrientes Grand Slam in Argentina came to a close on Friday with the women's draw down to eight teams and the men's Round of 16 confirmed.

Saturday will see the women's quarterfinals, semifinals and finals take place - all streamed live on FIVB Web TV, along with men's Round of 16 and quarterfinals (quarterfinals also on FIVB Web TV).

For the first time in FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour history all eight qualifying teams made it through pool play and into the elimination rounds in the women's competition. There has been two occasions when eight teams have made it through before (Men Cape Town 2005 and Men Stare Jablonki 2010) but there were nine qualifiers in each of those Main Draws due to withdrawals.

Women’s final matches confirmed
Challenging each other to reach new heights, eight women’s teams have emerged victorious to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals, semifinals and medal matches of the $440,000 FIVB Corrientes Grand Slam double-gender tournament.  Winning their respective pools to earn a first-round bye in the 24-team single elimination portion of the event were three teams each from Brazil and Germany along with one each from the Netherlands and the United States. Men down to 16 teams
Completing the last of three matches in round-robin pool play and the first round of single-elimination Friday, the men’s competition has been cut in half to 16 teams heading into Saturday’s at the $440,000 FIVB Corrientes Grand Slam double-gender tournament completed pool play. On Saturday, round of 16 and quarterfinals for the men’s competition will be held. More

Men moving to single-elimination
As the sun started to shine more than in the first two days of the competition, men’s teams at the $440,000 FIVB Corrientes Grand Slam double-gender tournament completed pool play early Friday afternoon with their last of three matches. Later Friday afternoon the top 24 teams from the 32-team pool play will advance to the single-elimination bracket and play the first round. More

Women finish pool play
With two rounds of single elimination phase still to be played today, things are heating up in Corrientes as the women have completed pool play at the $440,000 FIVB Corrientes Grand Slam double-gender tournament.  Winning their respective pools to earn a first-round bye in the 24-team single elimination portion of the event were three teams each from Brazil and Germany along with one each from the Netherlands and the United States.
