Switzerland’s Gerson-Prawdzic warming up well for Corrientes

Zurich, Switzerland, May 16, 2013 – Mirco Gerson and Alexei Prawdzic, beach volleyball’s newly formed duo from Switzerland, celebrated their surprise first victory at the 2013 Coop Beach Tour which took place in Zurich. The pair are now hoping to qualify for the Corrientes Grand Slam in Argentina, which will take place from May 22 to 26.  

Alexei Prawdzic expressed his delight at winning his first gold medal at the tournament and in his hometown. “We have been training hard for six months during the winter, working with a coach to help improve our mental focus,” said Prawdzic. “We spent three weeks at a time at training camps in Tenerife and Turkey and we train daily at the Beach Center in Berne. In Zurich we wanted to enjoy every game and play in a relaxed manner. I’m pleased with a job very well done!”

Prawdzic-Gerson beat Germany’s Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik in the semifinal the second German duo of Philip Gabathuler and Jonas Weingart on the last day of the tournament to take the gold medal.

About 30,000 spectators came out to watch the beach volleyball action that took place over 32 matches.

Spain’s top duo Elisa Baquerizo and Liliana Fernandez prevailed in the women’s competition beating current Swiss champions Isabelle Forrer/Anouk Vergé-Dépré 2-0.
