Mexico’s Virgen and Ontiveros win again in NORCECA Beach

Guatemala City, Guatemala, April 22, 2013 – Mexico’s Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros won the men’s division of the Guatemala Beach Volleyball Tournament on Sunday, the third stop of the 2013 NORCECA Circuit, with a thrilling 2-1 (16-21, 21-16, 16-14) victory over Cuba’s Karell Peña and Sergio Gonzalez.

It was the second victory in a row for the Mexican pair who won also the previous event in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic. Virgen, a winner here in 2008 and 2011 with Aldo Miramontes as his partner, increased his lifetime total of gold medals to 18, including four with Ontiveros.

Virgen/Ontiveros also had to play three sets in their semifinal match before prevailing 21-11, 12-21, 16-14 against Puerto Rico's Roberto Rodriguez and Erik Haddock. Peña/Gonzalez defeated Stafford Slick and John Mayer of United States 21-18, 21-19.

Rodriguez/Haddock won the bronze medal with a 2-1 (24-22, 16-21, 15-12) over Slick/Mayer.

In the women’s division, Canada’s Kacie MacTavish and Caleigh Whitaker won the gold medal with a 21-17, 21-16 victory over Jenny Kropp and Whitney Pavlik of United States.

The bronze medal went to Americans Brittany Hochevar and Emily Day, who defeated Guatemala’s María Jose Orellana and Lourdes Ramírez 21-13, 21-8.

In the semifinals, MacTavish/Whitaker defeated Orellana/Ramirez 21-14, 21-14 while Kropp/Pavlik edged compatriots Brittany Hochevar and Emily Day 19-21, 21-11, 15-10.
