Mexicans Virgen and Ontiveros win men’s gold at Boca Chica

Juan Virgen (left) celebrates with Lombardero Ontiveros after his 17th career victory on the NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit on Sunday at Boca Chica, Dominican Republic
Boca Chica, Dominican Republic, March 31, 2013 – Mexico’s Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros picked up the men’s gold medal at the Boca Chica Beach Volleyball Tournament on Sunday at the second leg of the 2013 NORCECA Circuit.

Virgen/Ontiveros crushed Brad Keenan and John Mayer of USA-A (21-14, 21-17) in the final match while Chaim Schalk and Benjamin Saxton of Canada-A won by walk-over against compatriots Christian Redman and Maciej Zbyszewski of Canada-B for the bronze medal. Zbyszewski was unable to play due to a knee problem.

It was the 17th gold medal for Virgen and the fourth for Ontiveros in the history of the NORCECA Tour.

In the semifinals, the Mexicans breezed past Redman/Zbyszewski 21-13, 21-15 while Keenan/Mayer survived a marathon match against Schalk/Saxton 21-18, 16-21, 16-14.

“I am very happy with the victory,” Virgen said. “We were able to play calmly and Lombardo made some key defensive plays for the victory.”

“It was a very complicated tournament because we were in a tough pool,” Ontiveros said. “In the finals we controlled the pace and blocked very well.”

In women’s action on Sunday, USA’s Jennifer Fopma and Brooke Sweat won a thrilling tussle with compatriots Brittany Hochevar and Summer Ross (19-21, 21-17, 17-15) in the women’s gold medal match.

“It is never fun to play against a team of your own country,” Fopma said. “We feel glad about this early success in the season.”

“Both teams played really good and we had to battle with the rainy conditions and the wet balls,” Sweat said. “I feel very happy with the win.”

The bronze medal went to Mexico’s Bibi Candelas and Martha Revuelta who won in three sets (15-21, 21-16, 15-10) over Heather Bansley and Elizabeth Maloney of Canada-B.

Fopma and Sweat also had to play three sets in their semifinal contest before claiming a (19-21, 21-18, 15-6) victory over Candelas/Revuelta while Hochevar/Ross edged Jamie Broder and Kristina Valjas of Canada-A by scores of (22-24, 21-14, 16-14).
