Two Canadian duos in Men’s Final Four at Boca Chica

The Canadian men's teams are doing great on the white sands of Boca Chica beach near Santo Domingo in Dominican Republic

Boca Chica, Dominican Republic, March 30, 2013 – The two Canadian men’s teams have reached the semifinals of the Boca Chica Beach Volleyball Tournament, the second leg of the 2013 NORCECA Beach Circuit.

Chaim Schalk and Benjamin Saxton of Canada-A and Christian Redman and Maciej Zbyszewski of Canada-B will take part in the final-four competition on Sunday morning, joining Brad Keenan and John Mayer of USA-A and Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros from Mexico.

Schalk/Saxton won 21-18, 21-19 over Avery Drost and Will Montgomery of USA-B while Redman/Zbyszewki outlasted Luis Rodriguez and Francisco Arredondo of DOM-C winning 21-10, 21-12.

Keenan/Mayer defeated defending champions Roberto Rodriguez and Erik Haddock of Puerto Rico-A 21-16, 21-12 while Virgen/Ontiveros beat Simon Blake and Daneil Williams of Trinidad and Tobago 21-8, 21-9.

In Sunday’s semifinals, Redman/Zbyszewski will play against Virgen/Ontiveros while Keenan/Mayer will battle Schalk/Saxton.

On the women’s side, the USA teams both advanced to the quarterfinals with a 4-0 win-loss record in the preliminary pool play that concluded on Saturday.

Brittany Hochevar and Summer Ross of USA-B claimed the top place of Pool A following victories over Diana Peguero and Nairobi Agramonte of Dominican Republic-A (21-15, 21-8) and Mexico’s Martha Revuelta and Bibi Candelas 2-1 (14-21, 21-10, 15-12).

The duo of Jennifer Fopma and Brooke Sweat of USA-B finished first in Pool B, winning by forfeit against Dominican Republic-C and then prevailing over Guatemala’s Maria Jose Orellana and Lourdes Ramirez 21-18, 21-16.

The two Canadian entries also succeeded in qualifying second in their respective pools with 3-1 win-loss records.

Jamie Broder and Kristina Valjas of Canada-A dominated Honduras’ Gina Flores and Martha Euceda 21-8, 21-10 and Orellana-Ramirez 21-15, 21-16 in Pool A.

Heather Bansley and Elizabeth Maloney of Canada-B won 21-12, 21-7 over Deborah Constanzo and Karla Montilla of Dominican Republic-B and 21-15, 21-8 against Peguero-Agramonte.
