Costa Ricans Morales and Alfaro win gold at home

Costa Ricans Ingrid Morales (left) and Natalia Alfaro celebrate their gold medal captured on home soil

San Jose, Costa Rica, March 17, 2013 – Costa Ricans Ingrid Morales and Natalia Alfaro, the pre-tournament favorites, delighted the local fans with a 2-0 (21-14, 21-11) victory over Elia Torrez and Swan Mendoza of Nicaragua to win the women’s beach volleyball crown at the 10th Central American Games.

“This triumph belongs to Costa Rica, that’s the only thing I can say at this moment,” Morales said after celebrating with the fans. “We wanted to present this gift to the fans. I don’t think we are superior. What happened on the court is only the result of hard work.”

In the match for third place and the bronze medal, Ingrid Lopez and Lourdes Ramirez of Guatemala defeated Diana Romero and Maria Vargas of El Salvador 2-0 (21-14, 21-17).

In the men’s tournament, Nicaragua’s Gerald Umaña and Henry Hernandez took home the title by defeating Carlos Escobar and David Vargas of El Salvador 2-0 (21-17, 21-14).

“I have realised my dream of being Central American champion,” Umaña said. “To me, winning the Games is without comparison because it is the most important competition.”

In the match for third place, Andy Leonardo and Luis García of Guatemala defeated Alexander Villegas and Gilberto Villegas of Costa Rica 2-1 (18-21, 29-27, 15-12).
