Alison wins hat-trick of King of the Beach titles

Alison made history by winning the King of the beach title three times in a row
Rio de Janeiro, 20 February, 2013 – Alison Cerutti made history on Sunday when he was crowned King of the Beach for the third consecutive year, the first athlete to achieve that distinction.

The 2011 world champion teamed up with Bruno Schmidt to beat Ricardo Santos and Harley Marques 2-1 (21-17, 18-21, 15-8) in the final on Ipanema beach.

"This tournament is really amazing,” Alison said. “The world's best are here and the energy is very different from other competitions. We're all friends off the court and that makes the tournament more enjoyable.

“I have to thank Bruno for helping me win for a third year, though he shares this victory. Each athlete has their own personal ambitions and to win this three times was one of mine. Next year, it will be even harder.”

Alison has now played four times at the King of the Beach competition and reached four finals. He first played with Marcio Araujo in 2010, before teaming up with Bruno for the past three editions. In 2011 they beat Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos and then returned a year later to defeat Emanuel and Pedro Solberg.

Bruno was quick to praise the player he has helped to a hat-trick of titles.

"He is a great player and has not won for the third time for nothing,” Bruno said. “It was an honor to participate again. Ricardo and Harley made it a great game and made the event even better than before.”

The first set was in the balance until Alison and Bruno took control and forced their opponents into a number of errors to lead 19-14. Harley held off a set point to push the score to 20-17, but a long serve gave Alison and Bruno the set.

Strong play at the back of the court from Harley allowed him and Ricardo to surge into a 10-7 lead, but good work at the net from Alison brought the score back to 13-13. Eventually Ricardo began to dominate Alison at the net and the duo took the set 21-18.

The closeness of the match continued in the third set, but it wasn’t until Alison took control of the contest at the net that he and Bruno opened a 12-6 lead. On match point Bruno showed great dexterity to get up to score the winning points and earn Alison the King of the Beach crown yet again.
