Mexico and USA reach semis in both genders in Aruba

Oranjestad, Aruba, December 1, 2012 – Teams from Mexico, Puerto Rico, United States and Costa Rica advanced to the women’s semifinals of the Aruba Beach Volleyball Tournament, the 11th stop of the 2012 NORCECA Circuit at Druif Beach on Saturday.

Mexicans Bibi Candelas and Martha Revuelta booked their ticket to the final-four phase by defeating Yarleen Santiago and Yamileska Yantin of Puerto Rico-A 22-20, 21-1 in the quarterfinals, while Dariam Acevedo and Tatiana Encarnación of Puerto Rico-B eliminated Nicaragua’s Elia Torres and Swan Mendoza 21-11, 21-14.

Tealle Hunkus and Summer Ross of United States-A won 22-20, 21-12 against compatriots Stevi Robinson and Kirby Burnham and Costa Ricans Ingrid Morales and Natalia Alfaro scored a 21-14, 21-9 victory over Jennifer Bily and Stefania Gandolfi of Cayman Islands.

In Sunday’s semifinals, Acevedo/Encarnación will meet Candelas/Revuelta while Hunkus/Ross will face Morales/Alfaro.

In the men’s competition, the teams of United States, Saint Lucia, Dominican Republic and Mexico captured semifinal berths.

In  the quarterfinals, Will Montgomery and James Drost of United States-A outlasted Aruba’s Mitchel Daniel and Eargenell De Cuba in straight sets (21-19, 21-17) while Saint Lucians Julian Bisette and Joseph Clercent beat Costa Rica’s Julio Alvarez and Luis Sandoval 21-18, 21-16.

Dominicans Luis Adames and German Recio battled hard to prevail 23-21, 21-18 against Guatemala’s Andy Leonardo and Erick Garrido, while Mexicans Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros defeated Nicaraguans Gerald Umaña and Henry Hernandez 21-8, 21-15.

Sunday’s semifinals will have Montgomery/Drost against the combo of Bisette/Clercent, and Adames/Recio against Virgen/Ontiveros.
