German partnership of Goller/Ludwig comes to an end

Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig at the London Olympics
Munich, Germany, September 17, 2012 – Germany’s most successful beach volleyball duo, Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig, announced Monday that their partnership has ended after nine years together.

The 28-year-old Goller made the decision to end her 16-year competitive career to concentrate on training and education. Ludwig, 26, plans to carry on for another four years and would like to find a new partner to aim for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Goller/Ludwig won four German Championships (2006, 2007, 2008, 2011), in addition to two gold, two silver and one bronze medal at the European Championships. They made it to World Tour finals seven times – although they failed to win any of them – and were firm fixtures in the top 10 of the world rankings. At the London Olympic Games, the duo finished fifth.

“I am very grateful for the incredibly beautiful, exhausting, educational and successful years I had in the sport with Laura,” Goller said. “Now, I am looking forward to new challenges.”

Ludwig echoed her partner’s sentiments: “It's always sad when things end after such a long time. I am very proud of everything that I could achieve with Sara. Now, I'm looking forward to new challenges.”
