Women’s 2012 FIVB SWATCH World Tour Championship to be decided in Thailand
Olympic bronze medallists Juliana and Larissa can even set a new record, winning their seventh career World Tour season title. Last year they matched the record (6) set by compatriots Shelda Bede and Adriana Behar.
The FIVB SWATCH World Tour will visit Thailand for the seventh year in a row. All previous editions were held in Phuket, but this year the stadium is set up in Bangsaen, a tranquil weekend getaway beach resort for Thai people, located 85 kilometres south-west of Bangkok.
Over 50 teams from 21 countries have so far signed up for the season’s finale. Thailand as a host county is allowed two automatic slots in the main draw, which have been given to Varapatsorn Radarong and Tanarattha Udomchavee and Jarunee Sannok and Usa Tenpaksee.
The Bangsaen Thailand Open powered by PTT is played over six days of competition with main draw starting on October 25. Matches start from 9.00 (local time) daily with feature matches in the evening. The semifinals are scheduled for Saturday, followed by the bronze medal match and final on Sunday. Admission to the event is free throughout the week.
Supporting the main event are a number of activities including the PTT Schools Cup and PTT Beach Volleyball camps on the finals weekend and a large sponsor activity zone featuring sponsor booths, a beer garden and games and competitions for beach volley fans.
The World Tour event in Thailand has always been a women’s only event. Two teams won the tournament twice: USA’ s 2012 silver olympic medallists Jennifer Kessy/April Ross and China’s Chen Xue/Zhang Xi. Last year the Chinese women beat Kessy and Ross in the final. Italy’s Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti won the bronze medal.
The Bangsaen Thailand Open is one of three women’s only tournaments this season and the final of 12 woman’s events on the 2012 calendar. The men’s season already finished in August with the Grand Slam in Stare Jablonki in Poland.
