Tanarattha Udomchavee (left) and Varapatsorn Radarong from Thailand on their first European adventure | Mariehamn, Finland, August 30, 2012 – Their first visit to Europe did not end very well, but Thailand’s Tanarattha Udomchavee and Varapatsorn Radarong were delighted that they finally could play at a European event.
’’Very happy to be here, but a bit cold’’, Radarong answered after being asked about her first European experience.
The Bangkok University students have been playing on the FIVB SWATCH World Tour since 2007, but their appearance had been restricted to events in Asia only. Until they suddenly showed up at the Paf Open at the Finnish Aland Islands this week.
’’We finally managed to get sponsors’’, 24-year-old Radarong explained. ’’And next year we will be able to travel to Europe again and play some more events over here.’’ At that time the two girls hope to have finished their studies as well.
Their European adventure this year only lasted a day. The Thai team lost their first match at the Paf Open against Czechs Hana Klapalova and Lenka Hajeckova 21-18 21-13. Later on Thursday they were eliminated in the loser’s bracket by Belgium’s Katrien Gielen and Liesbeth Mouha (21-17 21-17).
Udomchavee and Radarong will now travel back to Thailand. They will finish their season on home soil with the final World Tour event of the 2012 women’s season, the Bangsaen Thailand Open at the end of October.
