London, Great Britain, August 2, 2012 – Stats and nothing but the women’s stats as this year’s beach volleyball competition of the London 2012 Olympic Games through Wednesday’s Day 5. All the crowd-pleasing, heart-pounding action is being held in the purpose-built, sold-out 15,000-seat stadium on the grounds of the iconic Horse Guards Parade as the majestic venue includes a portion of adjacent St. James Park in historic central London.

As the final day of women’s pool play concludes Thursday, impressive team and individual official statistics reflect the depth and quality of the field here at Horse Guards Parade.

With eight teams in each gender being eliminated Thursday, A total of 16 teams in each gender will advance to the elimination rounds which begin with the Round of 16 split into two days on Friday and Saturday.

Again, through Wednesday’s Day 5 of this Olympic Games competition, of the 30 women’s matches held, 15 were two-set matches with two seed breakthroughs with an average time of 35 minutes per match.  The othe 15 matches all went to the tie-break saw just three seed breakthroughs with an average time of 54 minutes.

In the team stats catagory, China’s second-seeded Chen Xue/Xi Zhang have the most total aces with 15 following by a tie for second with Switzerland’s 11th-seeded Simone Kuhn/Nadine Zumkehr and Russia’s 23rd-seeded Anastasia Vasina/Anna Vozakova with 13 per team.

In total blocks by a team, Russia’s Vasina/Vozakova lead with 18 while tied for second are USA’s third-seeded Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh and Brazil’s fifth-seeded Maria Antonelli/Talita Antunes with 11.

In team attack success percentage, leading is Spain’s 16th-seeded Elsa Baquerizo/Liliana Fernandez with 65% while second is Brazil’s Antonelli/Antunes with 60% and tied for third place are Brazil’s top-seeded Juliana Felisberta Silva/Larissa Franca and USA’s third-seeded Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh with 57%

In team digs, Australia’s 22nd-seeded Natalie Cook/Tamsin Hinchley lead wtih 78, followed by USA’s May-Treanor/Walsh with 77 and Austria’s 15th-seeded sisters Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger with 58 total.

Individually, Russia’s young suprise team of these Olympic Games, 23rd-seeded Anastasia Vasina/Anna Vozakova, lead two of six catagories and are second in two more. Vasina is leading blocks with 18 total while Vozakova is first in point total with 75 and second in aces with nine and second in digs with 53.

Leading the other four catagories and there totals are China’s Xue (aces-11 and attack success-68% ), Germany’s Katrin Holtwick (top serve speed, 82 km/h), and Australia’s Cook (digs-66).

Australia’s five-time Olympian Cook, who has now officially retired from the sport as a player is also third in total points with 66.  Tied for third place with eight ace serves each are Greece’s Vasiliki Arvaniti and Switzerland’s Simone Kuhn.

In the serving speed catagory, behind Germany’s Holtwick is USA’s April Ross (81 km/h) and Germany’s Sara Goller (79 km/h). In total blocks, tied for second behind Vasina are Brazil’s Talita Antunes and USA’s Walsh with 11 each. Second in attack success percentage at 67 per cent is Spain’s Elsa Baquerizo while third at 65% is Braizil’s Juliana with 65.  Third behind Australia’s Cook and Russia’s Vozakova in digs is USA’s May-Treanor with 50 total.

In some of the miscellaneous numbers, the longest women’s match through Wednesday was one hour, nine minutes when Russia’s Ekaterina Khomyakova/Evgeniya Ukolova beat Canada’s Marie-Andree Lessar/Annie Martin 21-18, 28-30 and 15-13. The shortest match length has been 28 minutes in three seperate matches.

The highest scoring women’s set so far was during Brazil’s Antonelli/Antunes three-set win over Germany’s Sara Goller/Laura Ludwig when the German’s won the second set 31-29.
