Pires: Olympic responsibility a heavy load to carry

Two-time Olympic medallist and three-time world champion Sandra Pires said that whilst representing your country is an honour, the Olympic Games can be a stressful time for an athlete
Lausanne, Switzerland, June 22, 2012 – Former Olympic gold and bronze medallist Sandra Pires has said that building confidence throughout the year leading up to the Olympic Games will be one of the many keys to success for London 2012 in the latest blog for the FIVB website.

The Brazilian, who also won three World Championship titles, also said that pressure at the games is much more difficult to deal with as you are representing your country.

“It means a lot to an athlete to be selected, to qualify and to know that he or she will be representing their country,” she said. “It becomes the country’s victory and not only the athlete’s victory and along with that comes responsibility which can become a heavy load to carry. That can be stressful for an athlete.”
