Thiago and Ferramenta earn qualification ticket in Moscow
In the first match Evandro Gonçalves and Harley Marques send off Vitor Felipe and Moises Santos in two close sets (21-19 22-20), due to some excellent blocking by tall Evandro. ‘’We knew we had to avoid that block, so I told Thiago to set not so close to the net’’, Ferramenta said after they beat Evandro and Harley.
The two teams were even up to 14-14 in the first set, after that Thiago and Ferramenta build a small lead to close the set at 21-19. In the second set the game seemed to be heading for a tiebreak but Thiago and Ferramenta came back from behind and a mishit by Harley ended the game at 21-19 21-19.
Thiago and Ferramenta now lead the series against their compatriots 3-0 and do not seem to be bothered that they have to start in qualification every tournament. ‘’That is because there are so many good Brazilian teams. There is a lot of competition’’, Ferramenta said. ‘’Look at Ricardo and Cunha, they won the event in Prague, but had to play country quota if they had not received a wildcard here in Moscow. This is how strong Brazil is.’’
Thiago and Ferramenta will join the other qualification teams on Friday, competing for eight places in main draw pool play. Over 70 men’s teams from 28 countries enlisted in the fifth consecutive Moscow Grand Slam.
The Moscow Grand Slam is the sixth men’s event on the 2012 World Tour calendar and the third out of eight Grand Slams this year. Before Moscow was granted a Grand Slam status the Russian capital hosted a men’s only Open event in 1998 and 1999. Brazil’s Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego will be defending their 2011 title in main draw. But before that teams will compete in the qualification tournament on Friday.
