While Vanuatu’s Miller Elwin and Iatika Henriette currently sit well outside the top 16 in the Olympic rankings, their win in Seoul will prepare them well for the AVC Continental Cup final due to take place from June 20 to 24 |
Seoul, Korea, June 3, 2012 – Vanuatu’s Miller Elwin and Iatika Henriette won their first ever FIVB tournament by beating Germany’s Geeske Banck and Kira Walkenhorst 2-0 (26-24, 23-21) in the final of the $50,000 FIVB Challenger in Seoul, Korea on Sunday.
The top seeds were deserved winners in a match where they were pushed all the way by the No. 3 seeds and whilst the win gives them valuable Olympic ranking points, more importantly, it prepares them well for the AVC Continental Cup final due to take place in Fuzhou, China from June 20 to 24 where they stand a more realistic chance of qualifying for the Olympic Games.
Germany picked up two of the three podium places in Seoul following Christine Aulenbrock and Chantal Laboureur’s 2-1 (18-21, 21-19, 15-13) win over fifth seeds Ying Huang and Lingdi Zhu of China in the bronze medal match. The second seeds had earlier lost on Saturday to Elwin and Henriette in a tight three-set semifinal.
