Mariehamn, Finland, August 28, 2012 – Victoria Bieneck and Julia Grossner earned a spot in the qualification tournament of the FIVB SWATCH World Tour Paf Open on Tuesday. The German pair beat their compatriots Stefanie Huttermann and Chantal Laboureur in the only country quota match held at the Finnish event on the Aland islands.

Bieneck and Grossner started off losing the first set, but fought back to secure their qualification ticket in three sets (10-21 21-17 15-9) in 43 minutes.

‘’They served really good and I had some problems with reception and made too many mistakes in the first set’’, Bieneck said after the match. ‘’After the first set we said we should try to get in the game and make fewer mistakes, we knew that we could turn the game if we played our level.’’

The Germans now look forward to Wednesday’s qualification and their goal for the Paf Open is clear. ‘’We got into main draw at the last two tournaments, so hopefully we will manage it here at the Paf Open too’’, Grossner concluded.

The qualification tournament starts with a total of 23 teams playing two rounds for 8 spots in main draw. The Finnish fans have one team to cheer for in qualification, Sinisalo/Ahtiainen. They play Latvia’s Minusa/Inga on centre court at 15.00.

Although a Finnish autonomous region, the official language on the Aland islands is Swedish and the people feel a strong connection to this Scandinavian country, so the two Swedish teams in qualification can count on a lot of support as well. Hansson/Nilsson will play Spain’s Ribera/Antequera at 16.00 and Yoken/Linde are up against Whitaker/MacTavish from Canada (16.00).
