Eight teams from eight different countries advance to men’s main draw

The Hague, the Netherlands, August 24, 2011 – Eight teams from eight different countries advanced to the men’s main draw after qualification day at the FIVB Swatch World Tour HP Beach Open in The Hague. The main upset of the day was the elimination of third seeded Stefan Gunnarson and Hannes Brinkborg from Sweden by Poland’s Michal Kadziola and Jakub Szalankiewicz in the final round.

Kadziola and Szalankiewicz, 2007 world youth champions, lost the first set, but recovered and turned the match around. After 51 minutes the final score was 17-21 21-17 15-11 for Poland’s second team. Kadziola explained that the weather was in their advantage. “We are not the tallest team on the tour, but we are good diggers and the windy conditions were in our advantage. But it was a tough game against a very experienced team. It was our third match of the day, so I am pretty tired. Luckily we were well rested after not having practiced for a few days.”

Their best finish this season on the tour was 17th in Quebec and Shanghai. “We are playing better now towards the end of the season, so we hope we do better then 17th this time and gather a lot of points for next year, so we do not have to play qualifications a lot any more”, said 22-year old Kadziola.

Second seeded Harley Marques and Thiago Barbosa got quite a scare on centre court in the third and final round. Tall Dutchmen Jon Stiekema (1,98m) and Christiaan Varenhorst (2,11m), seeded 18th, surprisingly won the first set using their length for excellent blocking. Unfortunately they were not consistent enough to pull through. The Brazilians, who won the country quota on Tuesday, advanced to the main draw winning 15-21 21-16 15-10.

Top seeded Danish Bo Soderberg and Anders Lund Hoyer made it to the main draw without losing a set, although they had a close one, 26-24 21-16, against Russia’s Serguei Prokopiev/Yury Bogatov in the final round. The other teams that advanced to the main draw were French brothers Andy and Kevin Ces, twin brothers Matteo and Paolo Ingrosso from Italy, Austria’s Clemens Doppler/Matthias Mellitzer, Australia’s Sam Boehm/Isaac Kapa and Jason Lochhead/Kirk Pitman from New Zealand.

The men’s main draw starts on Thursday in a double elimination format. The semifinals are scheduled for Saturday, with the finals being played on Sunday. Last year’s winner Casey Jennings will defend his title this week. His partner Kevin Wong stayed behind in the USA, Jennings will play with Casey Patterson.

The HP Beach Open is the 13th stage on the 14 tournament FIVB Swatch World Tour and also the final double gender event on the 2011 calendar. The men finish the season in Agadir, where the Morocco Open runs from October 4-9.
