The Hague, the Netherlands, August 24, 2011 – Host country the Netherlands advanced two more teams to the main draw of the FIVB Swatch World Tour HP Beach Open. In total five Dutch teams will compete in the double elimination women’s main tournament, starting Thursday. The other duo’s surviving qualifications in The Hague were USA’s Lauren Fendrick/Brooke Hanson, Brazil’s Taiana Lima/Vivian da Conceicao, Australia’s Natalie Cook/Tamsin Hinchley, Georgia’s Saka/Rtvelo, Kathrine Maaseide/Ingrid Torlen from Norway and China’s Fan Wang/Yuanyuan Ma.

Dutch veterans Rebekka Kadijk en Merel Mooren finished third in nationals this past weekend. On Wednesday they beat Sweden’s Nilsson/Hansson and Swiss Graessli/Goricanec after a bye in the first round. “It is always nice to play in our own country. Last year we needed three games of three sets to advance to main draw. Now, an easy two games of two sets. It was windy today and we usually play very well in windy conditions”, 32-year old Kadijk said. Roos van der Hoeven and Jantine van der Vlist were the second Dutch team to qualify for the main draw.

Top seeded USA team Fendrick/Hanson did not lose a set in qualifying. They also got a bye in the first round and defeated Swiss Kayser/Heidrich and Czech Dubovcova/Nestarcova on their way to the main draw. “It was a good day to test the weather, to find our rhythm”, Fendrick said. “We do not have any expectations this week, we just fight for every point. Then we are happy.”

Fendrick and Hanson had their one-year anniversary in Poland one month ago and are trying really hard to get to the Olympics next year. But to do so they have to pass top USA teams Kerri Walsh/Misty May-Treanor and Jennifer Kessy/April Ross on the ranking list. Fendrick: “Both teams have been playing a long time together and are hard to beat. But we are trying to put oil on the fire, to fight really hard to get there.”

The main draw of the 2011 HP Beach Open starts at 10.00 am Thursday morning. The semifinals for both genders are played on Saturday, the finals are scheduled for Sunday. Maria Antonelli and Talita Antunes will be defending their title in The Hague. The Brazilians beat Chen Xue/Xi Zhang last year in the final. The Chinese girls, who captured their first gold medal of the 2011 season last week in Aland, are also present.

The $380,000 HP Beach Open is the final double gender event on the 2011 FIVB Swatch World Tour. For the women the Tour ends early November with the Thailand Open in Phuket.
