USA, German pairs clinch men’s qualification berths at Shanghai Open

Defending champions Harley and Salgado will return to Shanghai with new partners

Shanghai, China, May 2, 2011 — Casey Jennings and Kevin Wong of the United Sates and Sebastian Dollinger/Stefan Windscheif of Germany secured their berths in Tuesday’s men’s Qualification Tournament with victories in the Country Quota Playoffs as the 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour Shanghai Jinshan Open started on Monday.

Jennings/Wong held off fellow Americans Casey Patterson/Bradley Keenan 21-15, 16-21 and 15-12 while Dollinger/Windscheif saw off compatriots Thomas Kaczmarek/Alexander Walkenhorst 19-21, 21-16 and 15-12.

The tournament is the second of 12 double-gender events on the 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour, which also includes three single-gender events for women along with two single-gender events for men and a special 24-team Olympic women's test event in London August 9-14.

45 teams will compete on Tuesday for the last eight tickets to the men’s Main Draw tournament, which is to kick off on Wednesday.

Reunited with new partners for the new season, defending three-time event champions Harley Marques and Pedro Salgado of Brazil will return to the beach of Jinshan, Shanghai as it welcomes the FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour for the eighth year in a row.

The men's Main Draw also features reigning Olympic champions Phil Dalhausser/Todd Rogers of the United States, who won nine gold medals on last year's FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour.

In the season-opening Brasilia Open, which concluded on April 23, Dalhausser/Rogers defeated home duo Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego in the gold medal match with the bronze medal going to Wu Penggen and Xu Linyin of China. All the medallists from the Brasilia Open will appear at the $380,000 Shanghai Open.

The women's competition of the Shanghai Jinshan Open will start on Tuesday with country-quota matches.
