Germany takes pole position for final Pool B quarterfinal spot
Germany easily swept past the Dominican Republic in straight sets to record their second victory of the Preliminary Round giving them the advantage in the race for the fourth and final quarterfinal spot in Pool B.

Germany can only be beaten for the place by world number one USA, who play defending champions Cuba later today, in a must-win match for the Americans.

Against the Dominican Republic, Germany showed their class right from the first set. Judith SYLVESTER, Angelina GRUN and Christiane FURST were unstoppable and led their team to a 25-16 win.

The second set was a close one. Guided by Milagros CABRAL DELA CRUZ and Kenia MORETA PEREZ, the Dominican Republic managed to stay close at 14-15 and 17-18, and tried hard to tie the game. Both teams fought point-by-point until Germany managed to make a great run scoring four consecutive points to win the set.

The third set of the game was the most challenging. The Dominican Republic took a surprisingly early lead (9-2) but Germany fought back to turn things around. Firstly, they tied the game at 20-20 and secondly made two blocks and took another couple of points by serving perfectly to capture their second win in the tournament.

GRUN showed why she is considered among the greatest players of the tournament having scored 16 points, the only player in double figures. With this win Germany retain their hopes to qualify to the next phase, while the Dominican Republic left the tournament with only one win.
