Greece makes succesful Olympic debut
Greece's completed a successful Olympic debut with an easy straight-sets victory 25-7, 25-22, 25-14 over Pool A opponent Kenya at the Peace and Friendship Stadium.

Greece was the pre-match favourite and it didin't face serious difficulties from Kenya.

Greece showed from the beginning that they were determined to end things as soon as possible. Kenya seemed unable to stop the strikes of Niki GKARAGKOUNI, Maria GKARAGKOUNI and Charikleia SAKKOULA and the Greeks celebrated an easy 25-7 win in the first set.

However, things weren't supposed to be so easy for Greece. Kenya took the lead in the second set and seemed strong enough to keep it until the end. But, Greece remained calm, strengthened their block and managed to win the crucial points to reach to the victory, 25-22.

The situation did not alter much in the third set, as Greece grabbed the third and final set, this time 25-14. The last point was won by a fabulous single block by Niki GKARAGKOUNI, much to the delight of the Greek supporters.

The leading scorer for Greece was Maria GKARAGKOUNI with 16 points, while Rouxantra NTOUMITRESKOU, Zanna PRONIADOU and Niki GKARAGKOUNI added 12, 11 and 10 points respectively. Violet BARASA was the only Kenyan to reach double figures with 13 points.

Greece will face Korea on Monday 16 August in what will probably decide the future of the Greek team in the Olympic tournament. While for Kenya the road ahead seems very tough as they try to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.
