Brazil defeats Japan in opener
Brazil defeated Japan 3-0 at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in their Pool A match.

Brazil won the first set 25-21 in 22 minutes despite good efforts and a late rally by the Japanese team.

In the second set, the Japanese were desperate not to let the Brazilians to take a big lead and at one point had a seven point run to reduce the score to 23-21, before the Brazilians won the set 25-22.

Brazil comfortably won the final set, 25-21.

Brazilians Virna DIAS and Marianne STEINBRECHER were leading scorers with 13 points each, while Erika COIMBRA (BRA) scored 10 points.

Ai OTOMO was Japan's top scorer with 11 points, the only player of Japan in double figures.

Brazil play Kenya in their next match, whilst Japan play Italy, both on Monday, 16 August.
