Tunisia head coach
Giacobbe Antonio is considered one of the most
successful foreign coaches in African
Volleyball. The 55-year-old Italian has raised
the level of Volleyball in Tunisia remarkably,
to a point where Tunisia has won all the
continental competitions and represented the
continent in international competitions most
often.
Before starting with Tunisia, Antonio worked as
a coach in Italy before being appointed head
coach of the Italian
national women’s team.
The former professor of sports then took over
the reins as head coach of the Tunisian men’s
team in 1999 and has since seen Tunisia achieve
incredible success. This includes qualification
to the 2002 World Championship in Argentina, and
title winning performances in both the 2002 Arab
Championship in Lebanon and the 2003 African
Championship in Egypt.
He also led Tunisia to the silver medal in the
2001 Mediterranean Games in Tunisia after a
magnificent
final against Italy and saw Tunisia qualify for
the 2003 World Cup in Japan, where the African
representatives
recorded a historic victory against the hosts.
Antonio’s final achievement to date is leading
Tunisia to Olympic qualification in the African
Olympic qualification
tournament in Tunisia in January.
