Ljubomir Travica
has been the coach of the Serbia and Montenegro
men’s team since taking over from Veselin
Vukovic just after the World League in 2003.
They were big shoes to fill after Serbia and
Montengro finished second in that tournament
under Vukovic, when the 2000 Olympic champions
lost a sensational final in five sets to Brazil.
But Travica has done an excellent job,
maintaining a high level of play this giant of
world Volleyball brings to the international
stage.
Travica’s first appointment was the European
Championship in Germany in September where he
saw his side finish fourth behind Italy, France
and Russia. A wildcard helped Travica and Serbia
and Montenegro reach the World Cup and this is
where he showed his shrewd coaching style to
lead the Blue Team to third place and an Olympic
qualification spot.
Having coached in Italy for many years, Travica
has a fine coaching background and one year into
his new role
he is starting to put all his tricks into use.
His preparation for the Olympics included
resting some of his big stars during the 2004
World League. Now is the
time to see if he can work his magic to make
those stars fire in Athens in an effort to
collect consecutive gold medals. |
