USA beat Brazil to grab the third Pool B spot
The United States forced Brazil to their first defeat in the tournament with a hard fought four set victory in the final match of the Preliminary Round on Monday.

The US team claimed third place in Pool B with the victory, pipping Russia on set ratio difference and will face Greece for a spot in the semifinals.

Brazil retain their top spot and will go head-to-head with Poland at the quarterfinals.

The first set went point-by-point, but the US team showed more discipline as the set reached its crucial points. Led by Clayton STANLEY and Thomas HOFF the US sailed to a 25-22 win.

Brazil were ready to answer back in the second set as they were ahead, 21-17. However, a magnificent six-point-streak based on the blocking abilities of William PRIDDY turned things around as USA won 25-23.

Brazil improved their serving and blocking dramatically in the third set, having seven service-aces and 15 kill-blocks in total. Rodrigo SANTANA and Anderson RODRIGUES guided Brazil to a 25-18 victory.

The Brazilian team took the early lead in the fourth set, 8-3 and 12-7. They kept the margin at that level, 16-12. But the US team were about to answer back once again. They tied the set at 18 points and finally won it by 25-22.

PRIDDY had 10 points for the winners, while RODRIGUES, Giovane GAVIO and SANTANA scored 15 points each for Brazil.

The US team were boosted by a total of 42 points coming from unforced errors by the Brazilian team.
