Brazil swept past Russia in straight sets to remain unbeaten in the Preliminary Round with four wins from four matches and to head into the quarterfinals as favourite for the Olympic title.
The match between the world champions Brazil and Sydney's Olympic Games runner-up Russia was expected to be a classic. However, Brazil found it quite easy to sail to a straight-sets victory.
Blocking efficiency was the game's deciding factor. The Brazilians managed to win 10 points by kill-blocks, while the Russians managed only five.
Brazil showed their power right from the first set. Gilberto GODOY FILHO, Guimaraes Dante AMARAL and Gustavo ENDRES were unstoppable and led their team to a 25-19 win.
Everyone expected Russia to have more fight in the second set but it was to the contrary. The Russians weren't able to follow the up-tempo pace of the Brazilians and conceded the set after only 20 minutes.
The third set was the only satisfying one for both sides. Guided by Serguey TETYUKHIN Russia took the lead at 15-12. But the Brazilians managed to tie the set at 15-15. Both teams fought point-by-point till GODOY FILHO clinched the set and the game with a spike.
ENDRES top scored for Brazil with 15 points, while GODOY FILHO and AMARAL added 14 each. Russia's only player to reach double figures was TETYUKHIN with 10 points.
