Italy booked their place in the quarterfinals of the men's Volleyball competition with a straight sets win over the Netherlands on Saturday.
The Italian victory also dealt a blow to the Netherlands' chances of qualifying after they suffered their third loss of the competition. Although there is still one game to be played the Netherlands can now not qualify due to an inferior set ratio. A win against Australia on the final day of the Preliminary Round will put the Netherlands level with USA and possibly Russia but USA's and Russia's set ratio is superior.
So, with plenty to play for both teams started superbly with plenty of excellent rallies and jousts at the net. Neither team would let the other have the advantage until at 16-16, Luigi MASTRANGELO's great serving (including one ace) and Matej CERNIC efforts (including one kill-block) helped Italy go on a 5-0 streak to put them ahead 21-16. The Netherlands could not resist any more and conceded the set by six points.
It did not take long for Italy to take charge of the second set either. A 9-2 start made things easy for the world number two, who finally sailed to a 25-21 victory despite a late Dutch rally punctuated by points of Richard SCHUIL and Mike van de GOOR.
The scenario was the same in the third set. Italy built a margin of around five points and were never really threatened by the Netherlands. The final set score of 25-20 came as no surprise.
Andrea SARTORETTI (11 points), Samuele PAPI (10) and CERNIC (10) reached double figures for the winners, while SCHUIL (16 points) was the only Dutch player with more than 10 points.
