Russia wins battle of the superpowers
Russia fought back from one set down to make a brilliant comeback and claim their second victory of the men's Olympic Volleyball competition after beating USA in four sets in Thursday's final match.

The win puts Russia level with Italy in Pool B with two wins and one defeat, one win behind pool leaders Brazil.

With two matches remaining in the Preliminary Round USA, who sit in fourth place, are now in a must win phase to reach the quarterfinals, having only won one of their three matches.

The United States started very well in the first set with a 7-1 point-streak thanks to spikes by Clayton STANLEY and Ryan MILLAR. But the Russian team managed to tie the set at 12-12. A new rally by the US brought the set to 18-14 for the Americans, but the Russians answered again to level things at 18-18. The States proved to be calmer at that moment to claim the first set by three points.

The second set was also a battle of attrition. Guided by Stanislav DINEYKIN and Alexey KULESHOV, the Russians finally grabbed the second set by five points.

Russia took charge of the third set also. The US were unable to stop the Russians attacks and the end of the third set found Russia celebrating, 25-16.

The battle in the fourth set was worth the entry price alone. USA managed to overcome Russia's early lead and the Europeans fought back to claim the set and the match by two points.

DINEYKIN (25 points), KULESHOV (18) and Serguey TETYUKHIN (15) were the top scorers for the winners. The US were offensively led by STANLEY (22 points) and William PRIDDY (19).
