France outclass Poland for first win
After defeats to Argentina and Serbia and Montenegro, world number four France collected their first win of the Olympic tournament with a classy straight sets win over Poland on Friday.

The world championship bronze medalists have been struggling to hit their top form at this Olympic tournament and entered the match desperate for a victory in order to kepp their quarterfinal hopes alive.

An intensive training session on Wednesday had them ready for the match and they started strongly right from the opening whistle. The inspirational Frantz GRANVORKA and Philippe BARCA CYSIQUE were as per usual a regular source of points and they led the Tricolours to a surprisingly comfortable first set win. A winning margin of 10 points was not a fair reflection of the quality of this Polish side who were disappointing in the first set after having recorded a victory over Serbia and Montenegro and a narrow loss to Greece in their opening two matches.

Much to the disillusion of their numerous fans Poland failed to kick into gear in the second set and mistakes again led to their downfall, this time by the slightly smaller margin of seven points. Poland, ranked 10th in the world, were again unable to follow the French and were staring at a straight sets defeat.

The French kindly obliged in the third set and put Poland out of their misery with a comfortable third set win. Polish star Dawid MUREK was lacking in precision, while Piotr GRUSZKA struggled offensively, succeeding with only 15 out of 35 spikes. GRANVORKA and BARCA CYSIQUE were the top scorers for the winners with 15 and 14 points respectively, while GRUSZKA led Poland with 17 points in total.
