Italy run past Australia with ease
Olympic medal favourites Italy did not face any difficulties to skip past Australia in straight-sets at the Peace and Friendship Stadium on Thursday.

The Europeans were always expected to dominate but Australia still showed plenty of fight despite not collecting a set.

Australia started the first set quite well and took the early lead. However, Italy finally got their game in order and once they gained the lead midway through the set the 2004 World League silver medalists didn't allow Australia to keep up their tempo.

Following a stern team talk from coach Gianpaolo Montali Italy took charge of the second set right from the first rally. The usual offensive Italian weapons Andrea SARTORETTI and Samuele PAPI led their team to an easy second set win in 23 minutes.

Things did not change in the third set either. Despite some good blocking (10 kill-blocks in total), Australia faced problems with finishing their attacks (only 32 successes from 85 attempts). Zane CHRISTENSEN, Australia's offensive go-to-guy, had only 7 from 17 spikes from the floor. In the end the final score for Italy was more than predictable.

Matej CERNIC with 10 points joined SARTORETTI (12 points) and PAPI (10) in double figures, while CHRISTENSEN and Benjamin HARDY with 11 and 10 points respectively were the high scorers for Australia.

Italy now have a two-win, one-loss record, while Australia are still searching for their first win in the tournament.
