Russia shuts out Australia
Russia rebounded from their defeat to Poland on Sunday to claim their first win of the men's Olympic Volleyball tournament with a straight-sets over Australia at the Peace and Friendship Stadium, 3-0 (25-17, 26-14, 25-23).

Russia outplayed Australia, who entered the match on the back of a 3-1 defeat to Brazil on the opening day, in the first set mainly thanks to good serving and attacking by Alexey KAZAKOV and Alexander KOSAREV. Daniel HOWARD led the fight for Australia, but Russia dominated 25-17.

Australia improved their game and the Russians had a hard time in the second set. Zane CHRISTENSEN and Hidde van BEEST contributed offensively, but Russia were the more experienced team managing to survive and win the set by 26-24 in 28 minutes.

The third set was a point-by-point affair, but once again Russia proved more efficient and calm in the crucial rallies. Russia celebrated a 25-23 win.

The winners were guided by Stanislav DINEYKIN and KAZAKOV who had 11 and 10 points respectively, while HOWARD was the only Australian to reach double figures with 11 points.

Russia takes on the United States on Thursday, while Australia faces Italy on the same day.
