Brazil hold on to overcome tough Australian performance
Brazil had to fight harder than they had predicted in order to overcome the obstacle of Australia in four-sets 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-12, 25-21) at the Peace and Friendship Stadium on Sunday.

Australia shocked the world champions in the first set. With great spikes, excellent teamwork and above all superb serving (three aces in that period) the Australians proved that they truly deserved to be among the top 12 teams in Volleyball.

The 20th ranked team in the world showed all the signs of a class team when the things got tough as they managed to grab the first set of the world number one team 25-23.

However, the Brazilians were not willing to lose another set.

Andre HELER, Gilberto GODOY FILHO and Gustavo ENDRES guided the world champions to a comfortable second set win to tie the match.

The Australians seemed to be tired in the third set and they fell to the Brazilians 25-12, despite the offensive efforts by Zane CHRISTENSEN.

The fourth set went point-by-point with the Australian team ahead at many occasions. However, the experienced Brazilian team showed their quality at the crucial moments and finally won 25-21 to celebrate their first victory of the 2004 Olympics.

Five players from the World League title holders reached double figures; GODOY FILHO, Andre NASCIMENTO, HELER, Dante Guimaraes AMARAL and ENDRES scored 18, 17, 16, 13 and 10 points respectively.

Australia's highest scorer was Benjamin HARDY with nine points in total.
