Host Turkey and China stretch leads as World No. 1 Brazil and Japan lose
Turkey rout Germans to continue winning streak
Ankara, Turkey, August 16, 2011 – Hosts Turkey and China maintained their unbeaten records at the FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship Turkey 2011. Each of the duo collected a fourth win from as many matches with respective victories over Germany and Argentina on Tuesday – the first day of the second round – while defending champions Brazil (versus Serbia) and Japan (against Poland) suffered their first defeat.
The top two teams from first round Pools A to D joined together in Pool E and F to fight for the medals, while the third and fourth ranked teams are grouped in Pool G and H to play for places 9 to 16.The 1st and 2nd ranked team of Pool E and F will play the Semi Finals. The 3rd and 4th ranked team of Pool E and F will qualify for the play off 5-8. The 1st and 2nd ranked team of Pool G and H will fight for places 9-12. The third and fourth ranked team of Pool G and H will battle for ranks 13-16.

Turkey rout Germans to continue winning streak
Turkey vs. Germany 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-13)
In front of 3,000 delighted fans, host Turkey posted a straight-sets victory (25-13, 25-20, 25-13) over Germany on the first day of second-round Pool E action at Baskent Sports Hall in the 2011 FIVB Girls' Youth World Championship on Tuesday evening. With the win the Turks improve to a perfect 4-0, while the Germans start the second round with a 0-1 win-loss record.
It was a comprehensive victory for the hosts, with Ece Hocaoglu and Ceylan Arisan playing the starring roles. They soared through the air and pounded spike after spike and block after block. The winners were both quicker and stronger and served much better (13 service winners) on the day, forcing their opponents into 24 errors. Hocaoglu topped the Turkish scoring charts with twelve points, including five blocks. Ceylan Arisan scored 11 points and captain Damla Cakiroglu and Çagla Akin each contributed eight. Lisa Izquierdo and Jennifer Geerties registered ten points each for the Germans who had to go without their ill middle blockers Juliane Langgemach and Melanie Keil.
Turkey coach Sahin Catma: “Germany is a very strong team. That’s why I’m very happy about tonight’s result. We played very well, and served on a very high level.”
Turkey captain Damla Cakiroglu: “It was important to show our best level today to start the second round in the best possible way. I’m satisfied.”
Unbeaten China roll on with Argentina win
China vs. Argentina 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-7)
China rolled over Argentina in a straight-sets victory (25-17, 25-19, 25-7) on the first day of second-round Pool E action at Baskent Sports Hall on Tuesday afternoon.
With three wins already against their first-round opponents in Pool C, World No. 13 China upped their record to 4-0 with the victory. Argentina, ranked 19th, start their second round campaign with a 0-1 record.
Mang Shen’s China side were especially strong in defense, repeatedly repelling attacks from Argentina and displaying deftly-placed tips throughout the contest. Ningya Tang was the star attacker for the Asians, who have dropped only one set (versus USA) in the entire tournament.
Tang finished with 13 points including four service winners. Ruoya Xu had two blocks among her 12 points and Ning Wang registered 9 tallies. Argentina's Priscila Bosio and Sol Piccolo finished in double figures for the defeated side compiling ten points each.
China coach Mang Shen: “We were very well prepared as we knew that all teams in the second round would be very strong. We watched many videos to know everything about Argentina. I’m very satisfied.”
China captain Jiao Chen: “We played very well today. We wish Argentina and us good luck for the upcoming matches.”

Serbia surprise unbeaten Brazil in epic thriller
Brazil vs. Serbia 2-3 (28-26, 25-21, 21-25, 17-25, 15-17)
Serbia outlasted World No.1 Brazil in five sets (26-28, 21-25, 25-21, 25-17, 17-15) in a thrilling start to second-round Pool F play at the FIVB Girl’s Youth World Championship at Baskent Sports Hall on Tuesday afternoon.
Captain Bianka Busa (20 points), Nikolina Lukic (19) as well as Natasa Cikiriz carried their team to victory in an intense match of 141 (!) minutes of play. Brazil’s Gabriela booked 25 points for the defending champions who suffer their first defeat at FIVB Girl’s Youth World Championship in Turkey.
Brazil jumped out for a 3-0 lead in the deciding set with Nayara serving two service winners. Gabriela added a point from back row after an epic rally to move the scoreboard to 6-2 in Brazil’s favor. Serbia came closer at 10-11. Back and forth it went with both teams having two match balls, but couldn’t complete. Serbia finally seized victory at 17-15 after 141 minutes of play with Brazil’s captain Raquel sending a quick attack out of bounds.
Serbia coach Milan Grsic: “I’m happy, this was our first win ever over Brazil. We lost 2-3 in 2009 Girl’s Youth World Championship final in Thailand, but were the luckier team today. It’s a big moment for Serbia’s volleyball.”
Poland send Japan to first defeat
Poland vs. Japan 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 21-25, 25-20)
Ankara, Turkey, August 16, 2011 - Poland handed Japan a four-set defeat (25-23, 25-17, 21-25, 25-20) on tonight’s last match of second-round Pool F play at Baskent Sports Hall in Ankara. It took a gritty performance from 29th ranked Poland to overcome a Japanese squad that had lost only two sets entering the match and is ranked fourth in the world.
Aleksandra Wojcik was a pivotal player for Poland, finishing with 16 points, while captain Iga Chojnacka and Patrycja Flakus added 13 and 12 respectively. Nozomi Ito put on another powerful display for Japan but could not lift her team to victory. She finished with a match-high 17 points and Kasumi Nakaya charted 14. Poland’s side had the advantage at the net, scoring with twelve blocks. Japan finished with two.
Poland coach Andrzej Pec: “I’m proud of my players, they played on a very high level tonight, especially at the net.” This is our first set to the final four.”
Poland captain Iga Chojnacka: “We were afraid of Japan, but played very well. We kept focus on our aggressivity at the net. That was the key factor.”
Pool G
USA hammer Slovakia in straight sets
USA vs. Slovakia 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-19)
World No. 2 USA starts their way in Pool G with 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-19) victory in their match against 28th ranked Slovakia at Ankara Sports Arena. In their first match of the second round of Championship USA start Pool G standings with win-loss record of 1-0, while Slovakia suffered 0-1 record. The best scorer among USA players was Mallory McCage with 12 points, while Slovakia’s Nikola Pistelakova was her team’s and whole match scorer with 14.
"Although we lost, it was the best match for our team,” said Slovakia Head Coach Eva Kosekova after the match. “USA's blocking and defending was very good against our attacking and blocking. After our efficient defense my team could score many points but we didn’t.” She added.
USA coach James Stone was happy to see his girls improving even if they are playing in the 9 to 16 brackets. “My team is improving; it was a nice game for us. Slovakia's service was very good. They played very good today and it was a challenging match.” He commented cheerfully.
Thailand post first win by overpowering Egypt
Thailand beat Egypt 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-22)
Having suffered three defeats at the first round of their World Championship campaign, world No.14 Thailand rebounded with an impressive straight-sets (25-15, 25-12, 25-22) win against world No.10 Egypt in Pool G at Ankara Arena. Playing for the 9 to 16 positions Thailand begin the pool matches with a win- loss ratio of 1-0 while Egypt start 0-1.
The most successful player for Thailand's team was their opposite spiker Kuttika Kaewpin who scored 18 points, while the best scorers in Egyptian team were Captain Farida El Askalany and Kenzie Assem, scored 7 points each.
"Egypt pushed harder in the third set but we managed to win," Said the Thailand Coach Jarun Niemtuptim. ''Most of our players played very good today. I don't know why they did not played this way in previous sets. Tomorrow we will play with USA and it will be the main fight for us.”
Pool H
Resurgent Italy put paid to Algeria
Italy beat Algeria 3-0 (25-8, 25-16, 25-18)
Twelfth world ranked Italy relieved some of their wounds after missing the top 8 battle through sweeping the 17th ranked Algeria 3-0 (25-8, 25-16, 25-18) in Pool H. Italy leads the Pool with a win- loss record of 1-0, while Algeria dropped to 0-1.
Although it was relatively better than the first round matches, again the undisciplined reception and backline defense of the Algerian team were the main factor to lose the match against the outstanding Italian players who used every mistake to their favour. Italy again used their big guns Monica Lestini and captain Elena Perinelli sent their sharp diagonal spikes from position 4 aided by the middle blockers who didn’t allow the Algerian spikers to work. Lestini led her team scorers with 14 points while Algeria’s Louiza Bayou was her team best scorer scoring only 5.
"This is not good to play for the 9-16 brackets," said the Italian Head Coach Luca Pieragnoli sadly after the match. “We came here to play with the top 8 teams however we are going to play each match with strength and moral.”
The Algerian captain Celia Bourihane saw that her team improved in some items specially the reception than the first round. "We lost this match, but when we compare with the previous matches especially from the physical side, we played better against Italy".
Mexico open second round with victory over spirited Puerto Rico
Mexico beat Puerto Rico 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-22)
In a NORCECA derby the 10th ranked Mexico nailed the spirited Puerto Rico 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-22) in their first Pool H match at Ankara Arena hall. With the role of the combinations led by the setter Alicia Castro, Mexico succeeded to dominate the net action and organize their attacks through the strong attackers Samantha Bricio and Alejandra Isiordia who scored with a tally of 25 points constituting one third of the total team points. Isiordia was her team scorer with 13 points, while Puerto Rico’s captain Daly Santana was her team scorer with 11.
”We need to finish in the ninth to twelve positions." Said Mexico Coach Garcia Victor.
“It was a good match, the best playing team won and really Puerto Rico played a nice game. We did not start very well but we tried to do the best.” He added.
The FIVB Girls' Youth World Championship involves 16 teams and runs from August 12 to 21. Both Brazil and China are the record holders of the tournament with three crowns to their names. Brazil captured gold in 1997, 2005 and 2009, while China were crowned in 2001, 2003 and 2007. Japan and Russia both won the gold in two events as Japan topped the podium in 1995 and 1997 and Russia in 1989 and 1993 with the former one under the Soviet Union flag. Korea was the champions in 1991.
