Ankara, Turkey

The 16 best girls' youth teams from all over the world will battle for the World Championship title in Ankara, Turkey from August 12-21. This is the first time in the tournament's history that Turkey will welcome the event after playing hosts for the FIVB Volleyball Women's Junior World Championship in 2005. Women's volleyball has grown in popularity in Turkey with the senior team's sixth finish-place at the FIVB World Championships last November illustrating the fact. The FIVB Volleyball Girls' Youth World Championship 2011 promises to be as combative and entertaining as ever.

Ankara, formerly Angora, the capital city of Turkey and the country’s second largest city after Istanbul, is located in the northwest about 200km south of the Black Sea, on a hill above the Anatolian plateau. It has been the seat of government since 1923 and houses all foreign embassies.

Ankara can trace its history back to the bronze age, and has been a part of historic events through several great civilisations, including the Phrygians, Lydians, Persians, Greek, Romans, Galatians and Ottomans. The shades of this three thousand year-old cultural history can be seen in the old district around ancient Ankara citadel.

The small town, known only for the production of mohair from angora goats by the early 20th century, has developed into a modern capital, lively and on the move, with nearly four million people living there. Nowadays the city an important commercial and key industrial location.
