Cuba wins in four sets against France

Cuba's players celebrate opening victory in four sets over France

Almirante Brown, Argentina, August 19, 2011 – Cuba scored a 3-1 (25-20, 16-25, 25-21, 25-21) victory over France in Pool C of the 2011 FIVB Boy’s World Championship.

Three Cuban players finished in double figures in the scores with Yordan Bisset leading the parade with 16 followed by Danger Quintana (15) and Lazaro Fundora (14). Quintana totaled four blocks and Bisset finished with 3 aces. France’s Thibault Rossard led all the scorers with a match-high 18 points while Soane Falafala and Trevor Clevenot registered 14 and 12 respectively.

Cuba led the blocking category 11-7 while France held a slight margin in service aces 8-6. The defeated side committed 33 errors to 25 by the winning team.

Cuba came out firing at the start of the first set and raced into 5-1 and 8-3 leads with powerful serves causing damage to the French reception. They rushed to a 16-8 advantage at the second technical time-out. Coach Rodolfo Sanchez called for a time-out when the difference narrowed to three points (17-14). When play resumed Cuba, blocked several times to increase the gap to 24-17. After three consecutive points by France, Sanchez called for another time-out and Fundora converted the final point with an amazing spike from the right side (25-20).

In the second set, France took advantage of the erratic play of Cuba in the early going and never looked back. The French team built up a 4-point lead when Coach Sanchez called for a time out. The first technical pause found France with a 5-point difference (8-3). The margin expanded to 10-3 with the inspired offense of lefty Thibault Roosard and was 16-8 at the second stop. The European team reached the 20-point mark commanding 20-11. Falafala parlayed ace and spike setting up the stage for the attack off the block by Clevenot and the 25-16 in favor of the European side.

Cuba reached the first TTO of the third set with a difference of 4 points (8-4). They maintained the same advantage (10-6) when France’s coach called for a time out. The French boys came back motivated playing better defense but Cuba was still in front 16-12 when the second technical pause arrived. The European team came close in the score at 19-17 with Falafala and Rossard in a hot streak but Cuba recovered to win by a comfortable 4-point difference 25-21 with a bomb by Fundora from the right side.

Cuba led 8-4 in the fourth set but France reacted to make the difference smaller and both teams battled point by point. One ace by Bisset earned Cuba a 15-13 lead and Falafala hit out of bounds for 16-14. France had the opportunity to tie up the charts, but it was not possible due to a counter attack made by Fundora. Bisset’s spike and ace gave Cuba a four-point cushion (23-19) and the match finished with the fantastic Fundora’s spike (25-21).
