Serbia sinks Russia in straight sets

Serbians celebrate their ticket to the gold medal match

Russia took the lead 8-7 but Serbia recovered and built a three-point lead behind the attack of Kovacevic, Peric and Atanasijevic. The Serbians led 16-13 at the second stop and increasing to 18-13 with Atanasijevic’s spike and one Russian mistake. Kindinov hit one righthander and Shchadilov continued the Russian streak. Serbia recovered with the offense of Atanasijevic, who totaled six points in the opening frame, and Serbia won 25-20.

Serbia went in front 5-2 on the shoulders of Kovacevic but Russia recovered and took the slight 8-7 margin at the first stop. Filippov blocked the attempt by Atanasijevic giving Russia a 10-7 lead. Serbia tied at 12-all via block of Milutinovic and took the lead via error. One attack by Peric gave Serbia a 16-12 advantage at the second technical time-out. Two consecutive blocks by Milutinovic stretched the gap to 18-12. Stulenkov sparked a Russian rally and the distance reduced to 24-22 but finally Serbia won 25-22 via defensive error. Kovacevic totaled 8 points for the set.

Serbia had an 8-4 advantage in the third set thanks to their blocking ability. Tsentalovich was able to maintain Russia in the game with consistent attacks and Russia cut the difference to one point via block of Filippov. Milutinovic and Tsentalovich exchanged spikes and Russia tied with block of Shchadilov. Then Kovacevic scored and Serbia was in front 16-14. Kovacevic increased the distance to 18-15 but Tsentalovich responded and Russia tied at 18 via Serbian errors. The spike of Kovacevic was out of bounds and Russia led 19-18. With the score evened at 22-all, Peric scored for Serbia and Opacic recorded a block for a 24-22 advantage. Serbia won 25-22.
