Spain to play for fifth place after edging India

Captain Carlos Baos celebrates with energy

Baos helped Spain to take an 8-7 lead. Ravikumar tied for India at 14-14 with consecutive spikes but Almansa answered back for the one-point lead and Spain led 16-14 after an India’s defensive error. Spikes by Bruque and F. Ruiz widened to 18-14. Long serve by Ruiz and spike out of bounds by Almansa reduced the lead to 20-18. Baos located a soft hit for 21-18 and B. Ruiz followed with a block. Spain won 25-21.

Attack and block by Bugallo around one ace of F. Ruiz gave Spain a 6-2 lead. At the first pause Spain was leading 8-3. The spike of F. Ruiz sent Spain to a 16-11 advantage at the second pause. Almansa’s two spikes contributed to extend the lead to 20-14. Spain won 25-19 with spike of F. Ruiz followed by ace of Bruque.

The fourth block of Bugallo gave Spain the 8-7 lead in the third set. Block by Navjit gave India a two-point lead. The spike out of bounds of F. Ruiz expanded the difference to 15-12. Then Baos and Jhon exchanged spikes and India lead 16-13 at the second stop. Two spikes by Vaishnav provided comfort to India 21-17. But later Almansa connected for 22-20. India won 25-21 with spike of Dilip and one Spain’s error.

India took a 4-1 lead behind the spikes of Jhon. Two spikes apiece by Omveer and Jhon increased the difference to 8-3. Spike and block by Vaishnav gave India a 10-4 advantage. India led 16-8 at the second technical time-out. India won the fourth set 25-16.

India started the fifth with block by Navjit. F. Ruiz tied but Bruque served in the net. Spike by F. Ruiz leveled the score but Omveer gave India the lead again. Baos tied 3-3 with a well placed shot and B. Ruiz blocked for the 4-3 advantage of Spain. Vaishnav and B. Ruiz exchanged spike and tip and Vaishnav attacked again. F. Ruiz followed an Indian error with a rocket and B. Ruiz blocked for the 8-5 lead. B. Ruiz and Bruque expanded the gap to 10-5.  Omveer and F. Ruiz traded bombs for 11-6. Navjit converted after fault of Spain cutting the difference to 11-8. F. Ruiz responded from left side and Omveer twice connected for India. F. Ruiz landed another rocket and Bugallo blocked for 14-10. Jhon scored for India and Almansa closed for Spain 15-11.
