Sole leads Argentinean victory in five sets

Argentinean celebrate the victory over Serbia

Atanasijevic scored three of the first eight Serbian points and Kovacevic added two en route to an 8-4 lead in the first set. After one ace by Argentinean Ramos, Serbia scored on attack and block by Opacic and Milutinovic for an 11-6 margin. Spike by Castellani combined with ace by Sole reduced the difference to three points but Milutinovic attacked for the 16-12 lead. Two Serbian errors around one ace by Castellani closed the score 16-15 and Argentina evened with spike by Quiroga. At 20-all, Milutinovic and Kovacevic for a two-point gap and Serbia prevailed 25-23 with a kill by Opacic.

Two aces by Fignoli helped to built an 8-5 lead of Argentina in the second set. The Argentineans led 16-11 at the second technical time-out with two blocks produced by Ramos. At 18-11, Petkovic served two straight aces and Argentina called for time-out. Hard spikes by Sole and Castellani sent Argentina to set-point 24-21 but Serbia reacted behind a bomb of Atanasijevic. Argentina finally won 25-23 with a quick spike in the middle by Sole.

In spite of three early points by Quiroga it was Serbia in front 8-6 in the third set. Argentina tied at 12-all with Quiroga and Castellani but Mrdak answered back with spike and block. Once again Argentina tied and took the lead 16-15 when the serve by Mrdak crashed in THE NET. Tied at 17-17, Castellani and Quiroga scored for Argentina only to see Serbia even the score at 20 after spike of Kovacevic and opponent’s error in attack. Two more errors gave the lead to Serbia 22-20 and Quiroga and Kovacevic traded kills for 23-21. Castellani and Mrdak exchanged blows and Sole blocked for 24-23. Then one serve by Castellani was too long and Serbia won 25-23.

Kovacevic parlayed spike and ace contributing to an 8-7 Serbian lead in the fourth set. Argentina took the advantage on kill by Sole and Mrdak tied the score at 14-all. Block and spike of Quiroga sent Argentina in front 16-14 at the second technical time-out. Serbia tied with spikes of Mrdak and Kovacevic and took the lead 17-16 with ace by Petkovic. Quiroga tied and Sole blocked for the lead. Finoli scored with a disguise play and Argentina led 19-17 and continued to win 25-21.

Two Serbian errors in attacks gave Argentina a 2-0 lead. At 4-1 after a kill by Ribone, Kovacevic and Castellani exchanged kills. Teams traded sides with Argentina leading 8-6 behind the offense of Sole. Kovacevic was red-hot and closed Serbia 9-8 but another error returned the two-point lead. Two consecutive spikes by Ramos gave Argentina a three-point advantage at 12-9.  At 13-9 Kovacevic scored but then served long for match-point and Sole closed for 15-10.
